Brace yourself: the motivational New Year’s bullshit is coming…
“New Year, new me!” they’ll declaim.
“This year, everything will change and I’ll be successful!” they’ll declare.
But I’m going to make a prediction: 99% of those declamations and declarations will never come to pass because New Year Resolutions simply don’t work. Just making a resolution isn’t enough to make a change; you have to take action and make stuff happen.
And changing yourself is the most difficult thing of all.
The only way to make resolutions stick is to make them a habit. And the only way to create habits is to recognise what the trigger and the reward is. I’ve spent years trying to change my ways, making New Year Resolutions, and watching them crash and burn only a few days (usually) after January 1 comes and goes. The only thing I’ve found that works is to choose one important thing that I want to do or change, then concentrate on that.
Then I identify a bad habit I want to eliminate, like checking Flakebook when I get bored or stuck in the middle of my work. So, the trigger is getting bored, and the reward is the endorphin rush that arrives when I get relief from that boredom.
The routine is checking Flakebook.
So what to do?
Change the routine. Instead of checking social media and wasting much more time than the five minutes I planned, I stand up and do a little stretching for five minutes. Then I go back to my desk and carry on, boredom alleviated and ready to get back to work. And you know what? I work better after that because my brain isn’t mushed from inanities on the internet and my blood is moving around my brain.
This little gem is one of the most valuable things you’ll read today: guaranteed. Especially if you’re starting to think about New Year Resolutions and what you want to change and accomplish in 2016.
But do you know what? Whatever you decide to change and achieve in your business and whatever goals you set, you need to know what you’re going to do to get there. Lemme give you your first action, if you don’t mind: build an email list and email them every day.
