How a thing of beauty can build your business

Do you ever worry you’re blending into the background as a business?

Me too.

It’s a perennial worry for business owners everywhere, especially with the proliferation of “me too” marketers all over the internet.

So it’s tough to stand out, because it’s natural to

Give your customers a gift. Build relationships and watch your business grow.

look at what the seemingly successful “gurus” are doing online and do something similar. The problem with that, though,  – for me at least – is that type of marketing doesn’t sit so well with me.

Low-value sales webinars thinly disguised as “teaching”. Endless e-books and reports that are shallow and in any case they’ve been done to death. A proliferation of video “teachings” (read: sales pitches) mushrooming wherever you look.

That’s not how I want to build my tribe and it’s not how I want to grow my business.

I’ve done a bit of it in the past. I pick and choose some bits and pieces now.

But in the end, the thing that will make you most outstanding is to simply and unashamedly be you. Then do something different.

The best piece of direct mail I’ve ever had. Actually, I hesitate to call it direct mail, because it’s so much more than that. It’s a gift, and I’ll treasure it. In fact, I’m going to frame it.

In the post the other day, I received this thing of beauty from Sean D’Souza of Psychotactics. I love Sean’s business – his podcasts, his books, his training courses. I buy from him often because I like him and I trust him and we share similar values when it comes to business and life and making money.

There’s no call to action on this gift. It doesn’t need one. He simply found out what a selection of his clients’ favourite animals were, then illustrated an envelope for us.

It’s relationship building, pure and simple, and it works.

What could you create and send to your clients and prospects?

Vicky Fraser is a copywriter, author, and entrepreneur. She really did run away with the circus… but when she’s not swinging from a trapeze, she’s showing other copywriters and small business owners how to work with better clients, make more money, and stop missing bathtimes, first words, and dinners with angry partners. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Get your copy here.
