Well. It’s probably simpler if you watch this video. It’s actually a short critique – a short version of the ones I do for free for my Inner Circle Members – but I wanted you to see it because there are some great marketing lessons in here about how to do direct mail. So I’m making it available to everyone 🙂
The four main takeaways?
- Pay attention. Who’s your customer? What do they do, think, feel, and care about?
- Always send a letter with a call to action. Always. Even if someone only requests a free sample or a brochure or a catalogue.
- Beautiful packaging matters, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
- Calls to action don’t have to be strident and imperative; they can be strong yet gentle. Like Thor out of The Avengers. Yum.
Anyway: as always, my advice is JFDI. Make a list, send them a letter.
And if you’re not sure where or how to start? Need some ideas or pointers, or a kick up the arse? Borrow My Brain. Because you will be one of the only ones (if not the only one) in your industry doing this.
Vicky Fraser is a copywriter, author, and entrepreneur. She really did run away with the circus… but when she’s not swinging from a trapeze, she’s showing other copywriters and small business owners how to work with better clients, make more money, and stop missing bathtimes, first words, and dinners with angry partners. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Get your copy here.
PS Seriously: watch the video. Because it’s a little masterclass in lumpy mail and because Jane, the Organic Beautician, is a superstar.
PPS You can find Jane here.
