Be more Borg: stick your sympathy up your…

This morning I have a little cartoon for you.

It’s all about something that’s a hot topic for me at the moment. And something that’s absolutely essential if you ever hope to connect with your customers and clients, build a trusting relationship, and build a profitable business.

More importantly, though, it’s something that’s essential if we want to build real connections with other people.

And it’s hard. Much harder than it sounds. Because often, when it comes to personal relationships, it means confronting shit from your own brain that you find painful. So the automatic reaction is to back away, raise your shields, and set your photon torpedoes to stun.

When actually, it’s far less painless in the long run to assimilate that pain. Like a Borg cube.

Okay, enough with the Star Trek nerd analogies.

I’m talking about empathy. Which is not sympathy. No siree. Empathy builds connections and relationships; sympathy breaks them down and puts up those shields.

Why don’t you watch the short – 2 minute 53 second – Brené Brown / RSA animation and think about how you can use empathy to build relationships in your business. And in your life…

Because without empathy, we can’t hope to help people out of their holes – so we can’t hope to thrive in our businesses.

Vicky Fraser is a copywriter, author, and entrepreneur. She really did run away with the circus… but when she’s not swinging from a trapeze, she’s showing other copywriters and small business owners how to work with better clients, make more money, and stop missing bathtimes, first words, and dinners with angry partners. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Get your copy here.
