Why your New Years Resolutions are holding you back

Cartoon of a bomb about to explode

Instead of resolutions, start building long-lasting habits.

Here’s why your New Year’s Resolutions won’t stick: it’s really easy to stand up at midnight on a somewhat arbitrary day and declare you’re going to do (or stop doing) something.

But then you wake up the next day and have to actually do it. That’s the hard part.

What most people don’t realise is our brains are deceitful, manipulative junkies: they get off on making grand declarations and resolutions. They get excited about big plans and dreams… but doing the actual work? They hate that. So they take their endorphin rushes where they can get them (at the grand declaration stage) then disappear into the big blue when it’s time to step up, like the good little addicts they are.

To achieve what you want to achieve, you have to fight that junkie brain viciously.

That’s what my brain is like. And it’s what your brain is like.

Here’s the good news, though: I’ve already armed you with your first weapon just by sharing this little nugget of pure gold with you. Most people don’t know this stuff, and most of those who do know it have deluded themselves into thinking it doesn’t apply to them because they are in some way special. They’re not. They’re just floating around in a marshmallow cloud of junkie endorphins.

You, though – you know, now.

Which means you can set fire to your resolutions safe in the knowledge they were only going to trick you, and instead get down to the serious business of forming good habits, because that’s what doing well in business – and in life – is all about.

We’re basically a collection of habits.

Take out your list of resolutions and blow ’em up and burn them in a ceremonial burning, then really think about what it is you want to achieve in your business over the next few months. Next, you’ll want to decide what to do every day to get there… and make it a habit.

If you buy a copy of my book, Business For Superheroes, you’ll get the means to set your goal, then break it down into manageable chunks. Basically, it’ll drop-kick you off the cliff of procrastination and into the ball-pool of getting the right shit done.

So if you have to make a resolution this new year, make it buying and reading my book.

Vicky Fraser is a copywriter, author, and entrepreneur. She really did run away with the circus… but when she’s not swinging from a trapeze, she’s showing other copywriters and small business owners how to work with better clients, make more money, and stop missing bathtimes, first words, and dinners with angry partners. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Get your copy here.
