If you’d made one of the greatest scientific discoveries of the 20th century, then you got snubbed by the Nobel Prize Committee, would you be pissed off?
I bet Jocelyn Bell Burnell was pissed off when she was overlooked in favour of 2 men who worked alongside her.
She discovered the first radio pulsar in the late 1960s as part of her postgraduate research project — which is kind of a big deal in astronomical circles.
So it must have come as a bit of a shock to her when her supervisor and another researcher scooped the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1974 while she was left with her mouth hanging open in surprise. After all, Dame JBB was the first one to see these damn things, her research paved the way for a much deeper understanding of our universe, and she was named second of the winning paper’s 5 authors.
I know: WTF, right?
So, let me ask you: what would you do?
I know what most people would do: they’d take to Facebook and bitch and moan and bewail how unfair it all is (which it is, let’s be honest) and rant and rave…
And do nothing.
Are you most people?
Or are you like Jocelyn Bell Burnell?
While many prominent astronomers criticised the decision to overlook her — and right so, good on them for speaking up — Dame JBB quietly got on with it. She carried on working and carried on breaking new ground for women in science.
She served as president of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Institute of Physics. She was damed in 2007, and is visiting professor of Astrophysics at Oxford University, and president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
I bet she was seething inside… but her feelings on the Nobel Prize are her own business and she didn’t want to air her dirty laundry in public. There’s no dignity there.
Instead of talking about her woes, she did something about them.
If there were more business owners like her, more businesses would do better.
So often, I get questions fired at me via email, or “reasons why” business owners can’t do this, that, or the other to improve their fortunes.
But guess what? There’s a reason I’ve invested tens of thousands of pounds in myself and my business over the past few years: because it’s paid me back many, many times over.
Think I’d be living in my Dingle if I hadn’t invested in my own business, my own future, and my own self development? Not a chance.
Which is why, when I got the opportunity to go and have a threesome with Dan Kennedy the EBG, I jumped at it. Two of the most successful and knowledgeable marketing bods in the world pulling my business apart and putting it back together again?
Is it scary? Is it a big investment?
Well, obviously. But that’s also why it’s a damn good investment. I’m going to make sure it is.
Are you in?
Vicky Fraser is a copywriter, author, and entrepreneur. She really did run away with the circus… but when she’s not swinging from a trapeze, she’s showing other copywriters and small business owners how to work with better clients, make more money, and stop missing bathtimes, first words, and dinners with angry partners. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Get your copy here.
PS It’s also going to be a bloody good laugh. A whole bunch of the value I’ll get will be “out of hours”, at dinner and at the bar. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity here. Only a complete muppet could fail to make the investment back many, many times over:
