Watch as it wraps its sickly-sweet limbs around your flesh. As it enfolds you in its rotten embrace.
And then squeezes…
Horrifying weight on your chest, crushing the air out of your lungs? Check.
Hideously tight, itchy feeling every time you stand up? Check.
Eyes darting around, body twitching, mind racing? Check.
Yep: sounds like the business strangler fig has wrapped its tentacles around you.
It’s insidious. It starts off as a vital green shoot sprouting out of your brain, full of potential and ideas and excitement.
And it grows. It dangles its roots down, searching for sustenance.
You work hard. You study. You desperately try to market like all hell’s breaking loose.
It pushes its leaves up, shading you from the sun.
You worry and you trudge through the feast-and-famine landscape of small business ownership, trusting that one day it’ll all calm down…
Until the day you wake up and realise you’re stuck. In the middle of all that hard work, all that pushing and trying and dreaming, your business is consuming you.
It’s squeezing the life out of you.
It’s grown into a parasitic monster that’s sucking everything good out of your body and soul and stealing it. It grows around you…
Leaving you in the middle – a scraped out, hollow shell.
Okay, maybe you’re not a scraped out, hollow shell yet — but if you carry on like this, you will be.
We all know someone who lives only for their business, right? Their partners leave them, their kids don’t talk to them, and one day? *poof* they’re gone. Figuratively or, in some cases, literally.
They give up.
They check out.
Because their business strangler fig has taken it all.
It happens because you panic. You’re overwhelmed. Your focus on keeping your head above water means you take your eye off the ball. Off your mission.
Your brain will focus on what you tell it to focus on. If you focus on the panic, that’s all you’ll see — and it’ll crush you, because there’s no end in sight.
If you focus on your mission, though… that’s when the magic starts to happen.
You start at your mission, and you work backwards, with the end in sight. That’s when you can start to break the strangler hold and breathe again.
Best of all? You can take this principle and use it everywhere in your life, with everything you do.
You won’t have to fight against the strangler fig of business, or family, or fitness, or whatever… and —
It’ll make you a stronger, more productive, more successful person, faster.
This started off as an ode to strangler figs, and it’s morphed into way too much value for a simple email… because if you use it? It will change your life.

Vicky Fraser is a copywriter, author, and entrepreneur. She really did run away with the circus… but when she’s not swinging from a trapeze, she’s showing other copywriters and small business owners how to work with better clients, make more money, and stop missing bathtimes, first words, and dinners with angry partners. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Get your copy here.
PS And yes, I have been there. I have been scraped out and hollowed by my business. Just a few years ago, too. But I asked for help, and I got it. No more scraping and hollowing and howling for me. Or you:
