MY EYES! MY EEEEEYYYYYYEEEEEESSSSS!
Yep: I was out watching the solar eclipse and decided to use a puddle. Because for a smart person, I can be terribly stupid at times.
So I burned holes in my retinas.
Or, at least, that’s what it felt like…
Remember the solar eclipse of 2015? Me too. It’s burned into my retinas.
I only bring it up because I keep a little 5-year memory journal, in which I jot down interesting things that happen to me each day… and random thoughts.
I was scribbling in it the other day and looking back on previous years when I saw the solar eclipse entry:
“90% solar eclipse. Watched it in a puddle. Burned my retinas.”
Welcome to my life.
It was magnificent for the 0.003 seconds I saw it though.
Watching a solar eclipse in a puddle without any eye protection is like diving into the murky world of online marketing gurus without a business-condom. It looks magnificent and like something you should totally do right now, but you get a horrible burning sensation and then you’re blind and it’s very bad.
I am an easy mark for marketers. Which you might think is weird, because I am a marketer, so I know all the tricks.
Which I do. But I’m still human, so this shit works on me.
Now, though, I at least stop and think about whether something is going to be worthwhile before I throw my credit cards at it. Mostly I don’t get burned…
And I don’t want you to get burned, either.
One of the things that massively pisses me off is seeing business owners tricked into buying expensive courses and bright shiny objects that promise the world and fail to deliver.
Expensive stuff that focuses on tricks and “hacks” in an effort to make it all seem effortless.
Stuff that completely ignores all the ground work you have to put in first.
Marketers who promise you “the only funnel you’ll ever need” complete with 1,001 complicated twists and turns and tricks to “compel” people to buy.
People who clamour to get you to do a dozen different things all at once, so you can “be everywhere at once” — even stuff that feels wrong.
There aren’t many experts out there helping you get the basics right first, then setting your mission goal, and working steadily to make that mission happen.
Fed up of all the shouting and empty promises?
Fed up of all the distractions?
Wish there was a way to filter out the nonsense and get focused and productive?
