You couldn’t make this shit up.
In a copywriting Facebook group I’m a member of, some time ago, someone asked a question.
He was in a panic because he had no clients at the moment and no money coming in and didn’t know what to do.
So I gave him a simple, easy way to bring in new clients, and all it’d cost him was time and a postage stamp.
I told him to make a list of 50 companies he’d like to work with, then write them a letter. Then another letter. Then a phone call. He’s a copywriter. He should be able to sell his own shit, right?
And do you know what he said? (I paraphrase because it was a long while ago)
“I don’t think I’d even have time to think of 10, let alone 100.”
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKITY FUCKING FUCK?
Dude’s just told us he has no clients and needs money.
WTF else is he going to be doing with his time?
Actually that’s a rhetorical question: he’d have been doing what 99% of other copywriters were doing — twiddling his thumbs, panicking, and “hustling” on Facebook and LinkedIn. Then wondering why it wasn’t working, and complaining about it.
Do I sound harsh?
Do I give a damn?
Because when I see business owners struggling, it gives me a sad. I want to see you guys achieve your goals. You’re good at what you do.
But when you get good advice — great advice — and ignore it, I’m going to think you’re a dick.
Just goes to show: people don’t appreciate free advice, and they want the easy magic wand solution.
Anyway, there’s a shit-load of value in this email, far too much in fact.
So I may as well give you even more tasty treats: a brand new episode of The Business For Superheroes Show podcast is out now, you lucky thing.
And in it, Joe and I give you 10 ways to claw back enough time to do the damn work you need to do to bring in more clients.
